Nuffield and Leyland crankshaft end-float and thrust washers. Thrust washers on Nuffield & Leyland crankshafts are now only available in standard size. Therefore to get the required gap carry out the following procedure; assemble the crankshaft with the thrust washers in place, check the gap by using a set of feeler gauges, the gap should be 0.006 to 0.010 in (0.15 to 0.25 mm). If it is more than this remove the crankshaft and remove the two gears. The front face of the number one crankshaft main bearing journal should then be machined to give you the required gap. This machining allows the two gears to be positioned further on to the crankshaft to reduce the gap. For example if the gap is 0.015 in (0.38 mm) you need to remove 0.005 in (0.13 mm) from the shaft.
