The Call of Duty franchise has needed a shot in the arm for years. Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare seeks to provide a much-needed boost to a stellar franchise that is starting to go stale. The image of cybernetically enhanced mercenaries running amok 40 years into our future departs from the classic COD aesthetic. However, the game maintains the rapid-paced combat and high-quality production values that fans of the series have come to expect. It has doubled down on the best of the series while adding to the mobility and flexibility of the soldiers.

Guns, Guns and More Guns

Guns are littered everywhere in COD: Advanced Warfare. The weapons in this game are big, powerful and a joy to shoot. Each gun has its strengths and weaknesses. Some are perfect for punching a single solitary hole in rigid armor others can turn a tight corridor into a killing box. The gun physics are uninspired but, the animations and sounds provide great feedback to the player. The game even features sci-fi inspired beam weapons that stream energy between targets. Nailing an enemy with a beat attack and watching him drop to the ground is one of the game's many guilty pleasures.

The Story

The Call of Duty franchise has long been famous for its multiplayer battlefield massacres where players run and gun, live and die only to be resurrected shortly thereafter at a safe point on the map. However, there is more to the franchise than the multiplayer action. There is the campaign. The series campaign has had some big hits and big misses in the past.

This year’s campaign puts Kevin Spacey in the lead role and tells a predictable but, enjoyable story. The plot is shallow and thin but, it does a good job of pushing your avatar through a series of improbable but, unique scenarios. You will hop between busses on a freeway, cling onto a jet with magnetic gloves as it streams over Antarctica. You may feel a lot of things during the campaign of the game but, boredom isn’t one of them. The game stresses fun over complex narrative and comes off like a high budget action flick.

Graphics

This game is the best-looking COD to date. The snow-capped mountains of the Arctic have never looked as glossy and desolate as they appear in this iteration of the game. The caverns are glistening with ice, the wind pushes snow across the plains.

During gameplay players will experience rock-solid 60fps frame rates on both Xbox and PS consoles. The anti-aliasing could use a little work. Player’s will notice a bit of grit on the edges and there are a few framerate drops during high-resolution cut-scenes.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare offers an innovative approach to the classic Call of Duty formula. It innovates without deviating from the path laid by its predecessors. Instead, it doubles down on the fast-paced fun of the previous series by adding several more layers of depth without increasing the complexity for players.
