In Awesomenauts, characters have their own levelling system which increases as players play player vs. player or co-op vs. bots matches with the corresponding Naut. This is called an Awesomenaut Level.Levelling up an Awesomenaut yields rewards per each level. The current Awesomenaut level cap is 12.

- Level 1 - 315 XP - Advanced shop items. Allows players to purchase and use the 4th row slot upgrades in the in-game shop.
- Level 2 - 450 XP - Expert shop items. Allows players to purchase and use the 5th row slot upgrades in the in-game shop.
- Level 3 - 630 XP - Master shop items. Allows players to purchase and use the 6th row slot upgrades in the in-game shop.
- Level 4 - 1800 XP - Portait. The portrait of the corresponding Awesomenaut. Can be equipped in the profile menu.
- Level 5 - 2925 XP - 500 Awesomepoints.
- Level 6 - 4050 XP - Custom killing spree music. Upon killing 3 enemies Awesomenauts without dying, players can now listen to the corresponding naut's unique killing spree music.

The story is a secondary element to the game itself, and it acts more as a background than an actual story. The gameplay is more than enough to make players completely forget about the plot, which is fine since this is a multiplayer online battle arena game, also called a MOBA. There are a ton of games out there like this one, but Awesomenauts is in a league of its own when it comes to quality.
The game is unquestionably addictive. Players can easily spend hours playing this game without knowing how much time they've spent, and it is nearly impossible to tear yourself away from the game when you are on a roll. The gameplay is 3-on-3, so players will join with two others to combat an opposing force of three enemies. Players have the option of joining strangers in matchmaking or playing with friends.
The Awesomenauts themselves are the characters of the game, and there are so many different types that players might have a hard time deciding on their favorite. Each character has a different set of abilities, and players will need to try out each Awesomenaut if they hope to find the one that best fits them.
Players collect coins during the game that can be used to unlock new abilities or to buy power-ups to be used in-game. Players must make their choices quickly since everything happens in real time in the arena. Despite the fact that the action of the game is intense and quick-paced, battles can sometimes last for more than an hour. This is often due to the two teams being so evenly matched in terms of skill.
While there is no way to communicate with your own team, it is possible to taunt players you have killed in the arena during the battle. This is a good way to provoke an attack, which can help change the tide of a battle. A team chat feature would have been nice to help coordinate attacks, but that could be added later.
Unfortunately, there is no way for advanced players to separate themselves from novices within matchmaking, so it may be possible that a group could have a mixture of seasoned players and brand new individuals.
