After having some troubles with ActivCard Reader V2 (SCR-331) firmware upgrades and linux installation, I would try to fix the correct procedure in order to fix problems and have a working Smartcard Reader under Ubuntu.
I have tried the procedure under Ubuntu 9.04 server 32bit and Ubuntu 10.04 desktop 64bit. In order to upgrade the Smartcard Reader firmware we need a Windows box: I have tested this procedure under Windows Vista and Windows 7 (both on 32 bit edition).
Before starting please verify that your Reader has the correct part number : ZFG-9800-AD. This P/N is the only tested under Linux!!! Other P/N (904054) will never work. This procedure is valid also for standard SCR-331 USB Smartcard Reader.
1) Download right drivers and firmware on your Windows Box.
Before starting we need to have a Windows Box (Windows XP, Vista or Seven) to upgrade firmware. I have seen a Linux utility to upgrade firmware but after reading lots of blog posts reporting problems and issues I have decided to follow Windows procedure.
Visit SCM Micro Web site at http://www.scmmicro.com/support/pc-security-support/downloads.html and select SCR-331 nonCCID USB item, then select Windows XP 32-bit. Accept EULA and click on NEXT.
Now you must download SCRx31_USB_1.40_signed.zip file clicking on the “Download” link. Save it on your desktop and decompress it. This drivers are needed by FWUpdate utility to upgrade device firmware. Windows Vista and Seven automatically detect the reader but you will be not able to upgrade it until you don’t install drivers.
At this point we need firmware upgrade utility and firmware image V.5.25 that are available clicking on “Utilities and Diagnosis Tools“: select USB FW Update for Windows and save it on your desktop, than decompress it. Use your notepad to open FWUpdate.ini file and change the last line from “; SKIPDEVICEIDMATCHING=YES” to “SKIPDEVICEIDMATCHING=YES” removing ‘;’
Close the file and save it.
The last tool we need is the firmware image file. You can download it from SCM website or http://militarycac.com selecting SCRx31CCID_fw5.25.zip file. Save it on your desktop and decompress it.
Now we have all the tools needed by firmware upgrade procedure and we can connect Smartcard Reader on Windows Box USB port.
After few moments your card reader is installed as ActiveCard SmartCard Reader V.2
You MUST update Reader drivers at this point in order to upgrade the firmware !!!
Open your Device Manager and expand USB SmartCard Reader section. Right click on ActivCard SmartCard and select Driver Update. Do not attempt to install automatically but select manual driver installation, then select Manual driver files and choose your unzipped desktop folder SCRx31_USB_1.40. Ignore Windows warning and confirm drivers installation. Now your device is installed and ready to be upgraded. Open FWUpdate folder and run FWUpdate.exe utility. Select firmware images under your SCRx31CCID_fw5.25 folders and click next. The utility will show you some information on reader device: “as-is” configuration and “to-be” configuration. Click next to start the upgrade process. Do not disconnect reader or power down your pc during this process.
When procedure finish with no errors you can close FWUpdate utility and disconnect your upgraded Reader !
